Imo SWAN Calls for Serious Intervention on Sports Facilities in Imo. As Team Imo lost out in the 2nd Niger Delter Games

The Imo State Chapter, Sports Writers Association Nigeria (SWAN), has called for immediate intervention on Sports Facilities in Imo, attributing the poor performance of Imo Athletes in the just concluded Niger Delter Games as a neglect on Sports infrastructures in the state.

The association frowned over the Decaying Sports Infrastructure in the state, saying that it is Stifling Athletic Dreams

According to Imo SWAN, the Grasshoppers International Stadium Owerri, once a buzzing hive of sporting excellence, now wears a cloak of decay.

This scene is not an isolated tragedy. Across Imo State, sports infrastructures, from swimming pools to basketball courts, training gyms to athletics tracks is in a state of severe disrepair.

The consequences are stark, at the just-concluded Niger Delta Games, Imo finished last, a humbling result for a state that once produced national and continental stars.

Grasshoppers International Stadium was, in its prime, more than just a venue.

Opened in the mid 1990s, it was a symbol of ambition. It hosted prestigious football matches, athletics championships, and was a training ground for budding talents.

Today, the stadium is a shadow of its former self. The floodlights are defunct, the changing rooms dilapidated, and the electronic scoreboard a rusting relic.

Emeke , a former athlete who trained at the stadium in its heyday, said

” Coming here now breaks my heart. We had dreams here. Now, the young ones see this and their dreams die before they even start.

“How can you nurture an Olympic hopeful on a cracked track. It’s an invitation to injury.”

The story is the same, at the state’s swimming pool complex. What was designed as an Olympic standard facility is now a concrete basin filled with rubbish, stagnant water and debris.

The decay is more than an eyesore; it’s a chain holding back a generation of potential champions. Coaches and athletes cite the lack of facilities as the primary reason for Imo’s dismal performance at competitions like the Niger Delta Games.

In Imo, athletes train with handicaps, While athletes from other states have modern equipment and good tracks.

They run on potholed asphalt or this ruined tartan.

The ripple effect is profound. Scouts and talent hunters avoid the state. Promising athletes either abandon their sports or migrate to states with better facilities, draining Imo of its sporting heritage.

Imo’s consistent last place finishes are a direct report card of neglect.

Sports is not just recreation; it’s a sector for youth engagement, employment, and prestige, Imo is failing on all fronts.

The call from Imo SWAN is clear and urgent. A comprehensive, funded plan to rescue and revitalize Imo’s sports infrastructure.

Restoring Grasshoppers Stadium to a modern, multi purpose facility, rehabilitating the swimming pool, and building functional training centers across the state, with local governments cited as critical first steps.

As it stands, the decaying walls of Grasshoppers International Stadium are a metaphor for Imo’s sporting ambitions once grand, now crumbling.

The state’s last place finish at the Niger Delta Games is not just a loss on a medal table; it is a loud, urgent alarm.

Without immediate and serious intervention, Imo risks not just losing competitions, but losing an entire generation of athletes whose potential will remain buried under rubble and neglect.
