The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) mourns the death of a former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Mr Stanley Okebaram.
This is contained in a statement signed by the association’s Zone F (southeast) Public Relations Officer, Mr Pius Ogbuehi, made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Monday.
Our correspondent reports that Okebaram reportedly died in Bayelsa while serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Ogbuehi expressed deep grief, outrage, and concern over the tragic death, describing the deceased as a courageous student leader who dedicated himself to the service and welfare of Nigerian students, and calling for explanations.
He said that Okebaram’s death has left a painful void in the hearts of students across the southeast.
He called on the Director-General of NYSC to immediately provide a clear and transparent account of the circumstances surrounding the death, adding that “the silence and unanswered questions surrounding this incident is unacceptable.”
He also called on all relevant security agencies and the Bayelsa Government to carry out a thorough, impartial, and timely investigation.
According to him, the life of every Nigerian student matters, and no student leader should die under suspicious circumstances without accountability.
“ Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
“ If there was any act of negligence, foul play, or security failure, those responsible must be identified and brought to justice without delay.
“ We stand united with the family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Federal Polytechnic Nekede community during this difficult time.
“ We assure them that Nigerian students will not relent in demanding accountability until the truth is uncovered “, he said.
