OMMUNIQUE FROM THE SWC/LGA IMO STATE- SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY(SDP)
The Imo State chapter of Social Democratic Party(SDP) expresses deep concern regarding the recent suspension of HIS EXCELLENCY Alhaji Shehu Gabam, the national chairman of our great party on the grounds of alleged misappropriation of funds. While we strongly condemn any form of indiscipline within our party, we cannot support actions that contravene our constitution.
The suspension of the national chairman appears to be at variance with Article 19.5(ii) of the SDP constitution, which states that the National Working Committee(NWC) has the power to suspend members for violating the constitution, but must be exercised in accordance with the constitutional provision.
In the case of the National Chairman suspension, it is obvious that due process was not followed. Because how can a member be suspended by unknown members? Then after in two weeks time, a disciplinary committee was set up to look into the matter of a substantive chairman of SDP. Specifically, setting up a committee after the suspension has been carried out raises questions about legitimacy of the process.
To us in Imo state, the action is illogical, and the approach undermines the principles of due process and fairness according to Article 19.5(ii) above.
The Stand Of Imo State: We in imo state urges the party leadership to look inward by revisiting this matter, as a matter of fact, take time and assimilate Article 19.5(ii). So until then, as suppose, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam still remains the National Chairman of SDP as far as Article 19.5(ii) was not taken into consideration in the course of taking the disciplinary actions.
On this note, we advocate that SDP uphold that which it is known for- rule of law. Which makes SDP to stand out among other political parties in Nigeria. And the leadership should ensure any action taken in future must be done according to the party constitution because due process and fairness are essential in maintaining the integrity and credibility of our party.
In addition, Social Democratic party imo chapter expresses it’s support for the coalition’s decision, as it is in line with our vision for better Nigeria and good governance. We also recognize the shared goal of rescuing of Nigeria from its current sorry state. And we believe that collaborative efforts and strategic alliance can help drive meaningful change and progress at this time in ours country political history. Therefore, our reason for endorsing the coalition.

The last but not the least is that we in Imo state wholeheartedly throw our heavy support on Mallam NASIRU EL RUFAI’s initiatives and efforts, particularly in this critical period. His efforts in making sure that SDP voice is heard in the coalition is highly commendable.
Therefore, we stand in solidarity with him as he works towards advancing the party’s agenda, and contributes to the nations growth and development.
- Signed
AMB DR. ELUWA IFEANYI HENRY
SDP, IMO STATE PARTY CHAIRMAN.
