The Commissioner for Sports Imo State, Hon Obinna Onyeocha has expressed joy over the performance of Imo athletes at the recent National Youth sports festival in Asaba
Hon. Onyeocha made the commendation while receiving the members of Imo Sports Writers Association (SWAN) recently in his office along Port Harcourt road Owerri.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to members of the association for their unwavering support and dedication to the promotion of sports in the state.
He hinted that the presence of Imo SWAN at the recent National Youth Sports Festival in Asaba contributed immensely to Imo athletes outstanding performance.
The Commissioner who explained that Team Imo brought home a total of 17 medals, 3 Gold, 8 Silver, and 6 Bronze, said that the remarkable achievement is a testament to the hard work of Imo athletes, coaches, and SWAN collective efforts in showcasing their journeys through their reports and coverage.
He assured that the ministry will continue to partner with Imo SWAN to nurture and elevate the sporting spirit within Imo State.
In line with the vision to develop the sporting talent, he revealed government plans for the reintroduction of secondary school sports games across the state.

This initiative according to him will play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing young talent, ensuring that no potential athlete goes unnoticed, and will equally address the issue of aging.
He admitted that with planning and improved facilities together with collaborations with stakeholders both in the public and private sectors the state athletes will be one of the best at the National level, specifically as they prepare for the next National Sports Festival in Enugu.
He assured the athletes of Government commitment to providing the resources and infrastructure necessary for them to succeed. Adding that the State Government will continue to invest in sports development programs and facilities that will hone the skills of our young talents.
“They should train hard, and utilize every opportunity presented to them. With the right planning, improved facilities, and continuous collaboration, I have every confidence that our athletes will rise to the occasion”. He said.
