…Eight Institutions, One Trophy and a Shared Dream of Opportunity
Football takes centre stage in Imo State this July as students from eight tertiary institutions prepare to compete in the inaugural Imo Unity Cup 2026, a tournament designed to uncover talent, strengthen inter-campus relationships and create pathways for young athletes.
The competition, which enjoys the backing of global fintech company OneDosh, will officially get underway on Wednesday, July 1, at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Mini Stadium in Owerri.

Organisers describe the tournament as more than a race for silverware, noting that it is a youth-focused initiative built around talent discovery, inclusion and empowerment, with the goal of providing promising footballers with opportunities to gain visibility and pursue greater ambitions in the sport.
For OneDosh, the partnership reflects its broader philosophy of creating access and removing barriers, not only in finance but also in the lives of young people seeking opportunities to grow and succeed.
Speaking on the company’s involvement, Marketing Lead Cindy Ogba explained that supporting youth sports aligns with OneDosh’s commitment to innovation with social impact.
She noted that the company’s technology enables seamless cross-border transactions through digital financial solutions, allowing users to send, spend and convert money with speed and convenience.
According to her, investing in young people through sports represents another way the company hopes to contribute to a future driven by opportunity, ambition and inclusion.
Tournament Coordinator, Engr. Ugochukwu Egbonine, said the championship was created to showcase the vast football potential that exists across tertiary institutions in the state.
He expressed confidence that the platform would not only produce memorable matches but also open doors for players capable of progressing to higher levels of the game.
Egbonine also acknowledged the support of the Imo State Ministry of Sports and the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, for their role in bringing the competition to life.
